Sew on the applique - 9 steps

Step 1:

Draw the shape. On a plain paper draw the shape you desire, or copy the shape using a tracing paper. If you are a beginner, start with a simple shape with straight lines (star, triangle etc).

Step 2:

Cut out the shape to use it as a pattern: a utility knife or scissors can be used for this task.

Step 3:

Choose the fabric or fabrics for the applique. Fabrics that fray easily or thick fabrics are hard to work with. If you are a beginner, you may want to choose cotton woven because they are the easiest to handle.

Step 4:

Place the piece of fabric (right side up) over the sticky side of Iron-on interfacing. The Iron-on interfacing is to stabilize the applique and to stick the edges so they will not fray. Iron the two layers until they will be glued. Be careful not to damage the fabric by using too much heat or pressure while ironing the two pieces together.

Step 5:

Place your paper applique pattern on the fabric. Pin it around the edges.

Step 6:

Cut out the appliqué from the interfaced fabric using the paper pattern as a guide.

Step 7:

Place the applique on the garment. Pin it.

Step 8:

Choose the thread color. You can either match the thread to the color of the applique or choose a darker color. If you choose a lighter color than the applique, it can make the applique look smaller.

Step 9:

The satin stitch foot can be used here along with a zigzag stitch to sew around the edges of the appliqué. If a non--fraying material is being used for the appliqué, the straight stitch can be used to sew around the edges of the appliqué.
